Tucked away on the tranquil banks of the River Gambia, Hippo Bush Camp offers a truly off-grid experience for nature lovers, adventurers, and those seeking peace in a wild, beautiful setting. Located on Janjanbureh Island, our camp is a haven of simple, sustainable living, immersed in the rhythms of the river and forest.
The camp is FairPlay Gambia’s latest offering, which means your stay directly supports local livelihoods, community-based tourism, and environmental stewardship. Here, you’ll find no concrete hotels or swimming pools—just authentic Gambian hospitality, shady trees, campfire evenings, and the soothing sounds of nature.
Accommodation & Facilities
For couples and families, we have large, walk-in tents. The single tents are not walk-in, but they’re just as clean and cosy, providing a peaceful night’s rest under the stars. The tents are spread around the site to give a sense of privacy and connection to nature.
Hippo Bush Camp is very much a work in progress. At the moment, we’re cooking our delicious meals on an open campfire, with a bush kitchen currently under development. Composting toilets and a bucket shower provide basic but functional facilities, allowing us to stay eco-friendly while we grow. There’s also a private riverside swimming spot for cooling off, and several tables placed around the camp—ideal for relaxing, reading, or enjoying meals with a view.
Activities & Wildlife
Hippo Bush Camp is your base for exploring the natural and cultural richness of the area. Central and Upper River Regions are home to a variety of monkeys, baboons, crocodiles, bushpig, amazing birdlife and of course, hippos, which you might even be lucky enough to see from the camp.
Kayak on the River Gambia, birdwatch at dawn, or join a guided hike through the forest or local villages. Our community guides bring the island to life with their deep knowledge of the land, history, and traditions.
Getting Here & Season
We are open from October to May. You’ll find us 2km West of the town of Janjanbureh (also known as Georgetown or McCarty), past Armitage School and along the bush track.
Reconnect With Nature
